Haliburton talk on Artificial Intelligence Abstract Knowledge of the lithology of the subsurface is essential for exploring for and developing hydrocarbons. It helps us better understand depositional environments, matrix and fluid compositions, production characteristics, and ultimately exploitation potential. In the subsurface, the interpretation of wireline data plays a critical role in deriving this insight. However, manual interpretation of lithology is time consuming and costly, and the results are often subjective and inconsistent between interpreters. Supervised approaches to machine learning train…

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a method of data analysis that learns from data, identifies patterns and makes predictions with minimal human intervention.  Essentially AI solves problems by writing its own software.  AI is bringing many benefits to petrophysical evaluation.  Using case studies this presentation describes several successful applications.  The future of AI has even more potential.  However, if used carelessly there are potentially grave consequences. In a North Sea Field, AI was used to discover the relationships between…

Abstract: Optimal well placement requires three-dimensional (3-D) spatial knowledge of the reservoir formation and fluids. Current one-dimensional (1-D) inversions of ultra-deep azimuthal resistivity logging-while-drilling data recover formation boundaries above and below the wellbore only, 1-D modelling, by definition, does not account for any lateral variations. These lateral variations can have a significant impact on well placement and subsequent production-related decisions, such as where a change in well azimuth could be more beneficial than a change in inclination during drilling.  This…
