Aberdeen Formation Evaluation Society

As of 15th September 2021

Its Annual General Meeting time again, and we’re planning to host the AFES AGM as a physical event, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Aberdeen Airport, 14th October.  This will be the usual run through of AFES events and a brief look at Student sponsorship, finances and a general review of AFES over the past year.  It will also include any Committee movements.   This year will see our VP Technical, Chee Kong Chen, step down after his two year tenure and a new VP will be ratified into this position.   There are some other Committee movements which we’ll discuss also during the AGM.

Some positions are open, such as the VP Technical, and also Technical Sub Committee.  So, if you feel like helping out at AFES please get in touch with me (email below).

Additionally at the AGM we have a Technical Talk from Total on wireline and LWD data acquisition strengths and weaknesses.

Other news:   We will postpone our planned Autumn Seminar, which we’d planned for 22nd September.  The theme was on Wireline and LWD (Is the future of
petrophysics on wireline or drill pipe?).    Watch this space for a revised date in Spring 2022.

As usual, please feel free to contact me with any questions, queries, or indeed general suggestions.

As of 8th July 2021

We finally were able to host the Field Trip earlier this week, with the easing of CV restrictions.   Many thanks to Stephen Morris (AFES VP Seminars) for hosting such a detailed insight into depositional environments.   A breezy and damp evening didn’t deter either, and its was great to be able to meet face to face at long last!  AFES may look to repeat this event later in 2021, or early in 2022, as it provides an excellent analogue which is very practical to access.  Some photos are in the Archives section of this website, with more photos of the event available on request.

Recently we’ve been holding our regular monthly evening talk, with Dario Reolon from ENi (May) and Remke Ellis from TGT (June).  These event have been web based.

Looking forwards we have more technical talks – which include Premier Corex next week.  Please see details in the ‘whats on’ tab of this website.

Additionally, we have just released a ‘Call for Papers’ flyer for our proposed Seminar on 22nd September.  This event will aim to focus on LWD and wireline data acquisition, looking at comparing and contrasting between the deployment methods.  Again, specific details are within this website.  We’ll look into hosting this event as an actual physical event, but we’ll make that decision nearer the time.

As usual, please feel free to contact me with any questions, queries, or indeed general suggestions.

As of 1st May 2021

Another great AFES (half day) Seminar was held just over a week ago.  Thanks to Stephen Morris (AFES Committee) for pulling this web-based event together, and also to the speakers for an engaging afternoon on talks.  The Seminar was purposefully broad, with a topic of Porosity/Permeability, and it drew in a great crowd of 120 or so virtual delegates.  I think is a new record for AFES events!  We’ll get the available slide packs added into the archives section of this website.  As normal, if there’s something not included on this website, or you’d like to contact one of the speakers, then get in touch with us at AFES and we’ll try to help out

AFES also hosted Schlumberger (April 14th).  Schlumberger introduced their new wireline formation sampling and testing tool – The Ora.

Devex2021 is now in its final stages of organization.  This year’s event will once again be web based in early June.  The programme and details will be released soon (www.devex-conference.org)

In general terms AFES is beginning to think towards physical events.  We’re hoping to organize a Field Trip to a local outdoor venue soon, and we’ve high hopes to bring a physical Full Day Seminar, sometime in September.

In the mean-time we are continuing to offer monthly Technical Talks via web platforms, usually mid-month.

As usual, please feel free to contact me with any questions, queries, or indeed general suggestions.

As of 18th March 2021

Spring is nearly with us, and globally we seem to be working our way towards normal – slowly!

AFES has continued as ‘normal’ with web-based evening talks, February we hosted Ross Brackenridge, and more recently we hosted Alberto Ortiz (March), who spoke about Unconventional Shales in Argentina.  Being web based does offer some advantages after all:  we’d not realistically be able to easily host foreign speakers in normal times.

Looking forwards we have an evening talk in April, when Schlumberger will introduce their new formation testing wireline tool – ‘Ora’.

AFES will host a Full Day Seminar in April.   We’d originally hoped to have this as an actual event but we’ll remain web based for the foreseeable.   The call for papers is still open, for the theme of PoroPerm.

On the wider scene, SPWLA is open for Board of Directors voting.  Voting is open until 1st April.  Of note is AFES’s very own Tegwyn Perkins who’ll be a candidate for President, with the other candidate being Jennifer Market.

I’d ask you to vote in these elections, as its important for SPWLA to gain as much interest as possible, to promote a healthy democratic process, and of course passively show support for SPWLA.   If you’re an AFES member, you should also be a SPWLA member.  Both memberships are free, SPWLA affiliate membership is easy to apply for on their website.

SPWLA also offers Grants and Scholarships, from $1000+.  Applications are open until 1st April.

Devex2021 ‘call for papers’ closed recently and the Devex Committee are now planning the event schedule.  Watch this space (or the Devex website) for the final programme.  This year’s Devex will, once again, be web-based event.

As usual please feel free to contact myself at AFES (president@afes.org.uk) for any queries, or suggestions on how we can help to promote the local Petrophysics community.

As of 10th December 2020

Yesterday evening we were delighted to host Vassilios Kelessidis, SPE Distinguished Lecturer, who spoke about Drilling Optimisation.  The slides and recording are available within the archives section of this website.  Earlier in the month we also hosted Dr Christophe Germay from Epslog for a talk on Core Analysis (slides and recording also in archives section).  These two December talks were a great end to a peculiar year.  Unfortunately we will NOT be hosting a AFES Charity Christmas Quiz this year, but we do hope to bring you something on a similar theme in Spring 2021.

Looking forwards to 2021, we resume on 13th January with an evening webinar talk.  We have a suite of speakers lined up already and details can be found within this website.  Additionally we will be hosting a Full day Seminar on Porosity / Permeability, April 2021.  We don’t yet know if this will be web based or a mix of actual and virtual attendance.  The call for abstracts is out to solicit talks for this event.

Finally, Devex 2021 is planned for 8th and 9th June 2021, and the call for abstracts for this event is also out.  All details can be found within this website.  Any additional details, comments or queries then please feel free to contact me directly at President@afes.org.uk.

As of 16th November 2020

We enjoyed a great evening webinar last week (11th November), with hosting Dr. Mattias Appel (Manager Petrophysics Experimentation and Imaging Team, Shell).  We had once again we had a good turnout for the web based event and some good discussion after the main talk.  Unfortunately we cannot post the recording or the slides, but if AFES members are interested please contact us (President@afes.org.uk) and we’ll connect you with Dr Mattias.

During the introduction to this event AFES also was delighted to support Archie Children’s Foundation Charity with a donation of £1000.  Katie Kyle from Archie was online to receive the virtual cheque. [https://archie.org/]

AFES will bring you another evening webinar lecture this Wednesday (18th) 17:00.  The talk is from read Cased Hole, and details can be found within this website.  We look forwards to hosting this event.

As of 21st October 2020

Thank you to all who joined us for our webinar AGM and Technical talk on the 7th (October).

The AGM component saw a review of AFES’s last 12 months: events and seminar, student/academic links, charity and a financial walk through.  It also included the changes to the Committee.  Many of the Committee are staying in their roles but I’d like to welcome in Girvani (Secretary), Alex (Media), Chris (Sub Committee) and also Daniel (Student Rep) [more details in the ‘meet the committee’ page on the site].   We’re looking forward to working with Girvani, Chris and Daniel who are new to AFES, and also Alex who has stepped into Media Officer from the Sub Committee.

I’m also delighted to say I’ll be staying as President for another year at least.   The current Committee requested I stay and I’m very honoured to have this vote of confidence by the AFES Committee.

I’d also like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Kostas for his work towards Secretary in the last 12 months.  We’ve enjoyed working with you and all of us on the Committee wish you luck in your new endeavours.

Jeremy Titjen is stepping down from Media, but we’re relieved to say he’ll be on the Sub Committee for the foreseeable future.

Looking forwards we have two Technical Talks (again webinar based) in November, and once again in December.  Unfortunately due to current CV-19 issues it not looking like the Christmas PubQuiz is a viable option.

As always please feel free to contact me, either directly (greg.blower@gaia-earth.co.uk) or through the ‘contact us’ tab on this site.

As of 1st October 2020

Devex has recently been hosted.  This 100% web based, free to attend event (produced by PESGB, SPE and AFES) was a great success and well attended.

Looking forwards, we have our AGM and a Technical talk, again 100% web based (and free) scheduled for Wednesday 7th October at 17:00.  We’ll kick off with a run through of AFES’s year, finances and highlights from the year, as well as any movements in Committee Positions.   We’ll then hand over to Probe Wireline Tools for a Technical Talk.

Obviously CV19 isn’t going away anytime soon and AFES, like everyone else, is adjusting and learning to work in this new world.  We do this by bringing you a series of technical Talk which, for the foreseeable, will remain web based.  All details of events are within the pages of this website.

Welcome to the Aberdeen Formation Evaluation Society (AFES)

November 2018:  AFES President is a big step for me.  I’ve been in and out, and back into the industry since year 2000.  My MSc in Petroleum Engineering is almost done, the industry in general is picking up, and getting involved with AFES some 3 years ago really enabled me to ‘connect’ my day job (wireline), to the moonlighting (study), and to the industry here in Aberdeen.  So, I’m honoured to be asked to step up and follow in the footsteps of Ed Downer and Richard Arnold et al, in taking on the position of AFES President.

We have a good committee just now, enthusiastic and experienced.  I hope to channel this into continuing to deliver the quality evening presentations, and the annual full day seminars we produce.

I’m not going to pretend I’m an experienced petrophysics hand, I’m not (yet), but I can offer enthusiasm, and a tenacious presence at the helm of the organization.  My experience as being ‘just’ the wireline guy, with some academic study, will offer up to AFES a different slant than we’ve had before.  My vision, as always, is to educate, refresh and enthuse, and join the dots between people and entities, to understand what happens in the next subsurface department.

I have also learnt in the last few years that one’s network, and access to networks is crucial, and I hope my work with Devex will be a positive synergy to bring to AFES – of benefit to both entities.

Finally, please join us for our monthly winter evening seminars at the Station Hotel, with free nibbles and the odd complimentary drink.  Great topics and great networking to be had, just turn up, we’d be delighted to see you.
