January 2020

AFES Meeting: 15th January, 2020

January 15, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Cairngorm Room, Station Hotel, 78 Guild Road
Aberdeen, AB11 6GN United Kingdom

Haliburton talk on Artificial Intelligence Abstract Knowledge of the lithology of the subsurface is essential for exploring for and developing hydrocarbons. It helps us better understand depositional environments, matrix and fluid compositions, production characteristics, and ultimately exploitation potential. In the subsurface, the interpretation of wireline data plays a critical role in deriving this insight. However, manual interpretation of lithology is time consuming and costly, and the results are often subjective and inconsistent between interpreters. Supervised approaches to machine learning train…

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a method of data analysis that learns from data, identifies patterns and makes predictions with minimal human intervention.  Essentially AI solves problems by writing its own software.  AI is bringing many benefits to petrophysical evaluation.  Using case studies this presentation describes several successful applications.  The future of AI has even more potential.  However, if used carelessly there are potentially grave consequences. In a North Sea Field, AI was used to discover the relationships between…

March 2020

AFES Meeting: 11th March, 2020

March 11, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Cairngorm Room, Station Hotel, 78 Guild Road
Aberdeen, AB11 6GN United Kingdom
+ Google Map

Abstract: Optimal well placement requires three-dimensional (3-D) spatial knowledge of the reservoir formation and fluids. Current one-dimensional (1-D) inversions of ultra-deep azimuthal resistivity logging-while-drilling data recover formation boundaries above and below the wellbore only, 1-D modelling, by definition, does not account for any lateral variations. These lateral variations can have a significant impact on well placement and subsequent production-related decisions, such as where a change in well azimuth could be more beneficial than a change in inclination during drilling.  This…

August 2020

AFES Virtual Meeting: 5th August, 2020

August 5, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Virtual Meeting Aberdeen, United Kingdom

AFES plan to host SPWLA Distinguished Speaker Harry Xie (CoreLab) via Webinar. "Investigation of Physical Properties of Hydrocarbons in Unconventional Mudstones Using Two-Dimensional NMR Relaxometry" Virtual Meeting Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/afes-monthly-talk-aug-2020-tickets-112786591732 ABSTRACT Understanding of organic matter properties is crucial in characterization of unconventional plays. It is always a challenge for petrophysicists to differentiate and quantify mobile and immobile hydrocarbons in unconventional mudstones. High frequency (22MHz) NMR for unconventional rock core analysis has gained industry acceptance for its high efficiency and high sensitivity…

June 2021

AFES Meeting: 16th June 2021

June 16 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

16th June - Verifying Seal Integrity of a Formation Barrier Behind Pipe Spectral Acoustics, Remke Ellis (TGT) Abstract: Barrier integrity for P&A can be verified using several different tools and methods. A direct way to verify a barrier is to conduct a pressure test. These tests are time consuming for conclusive barrier verification, and there are multiple causes for failure. This presentation focuses on use of Spectral Acoustics in conjunction with pressure test to rapidly verify the integrity of annular…
