Lifting The Lid On Depth – Catastrophy or Opportunity?
Depth is the most fundamental measurement acquired – all well and field data is referenced to depth. We have two main sources of well depth, the Drillers Depth (LWD) and wireline depth. Drillers Depth (DD) is the cumulative length of pipe run in hole. It remains the well reference depth in well records, final well report, casing and completion reports. Wireline depth is measured by the length of an elastic cable with a logging sonde on the end being run in hole and out again – simple!
We take the depths provided and apply it in our reservoir models. However, we know Driller’s depth is shallow to true depth, and we know wireline depth has uncertainties. So why do we ignore these inconvenient facts to our primary reference value?
Russell Gray has worked in core and log petrophysics for over 30 years. He is currently senior advisor for data acquisition at TotalEnergies in Pau. Previously he was a Petrophysicist at Total E&P UK and Scott Pickfords and technical advisor with Core Laboratories
