AFES - Student FundingTo support our aim of promoting education in the areas of petrophysics and formation evaluation, AFES offers bursaries to MSc students and partial PhD funding. AFES currently offers 2 types of student bursaries to MSc students; an exam based prize and a project based prize. The exam based prize is currently on offer to students studying the Integrated Petroleum Geoscience MSc at Aberdeen University. It is awarded to the student with the highest marks in the petrophysics exam (or if there are 2 students with equal marks the bursary may be split between them). This will be awarded as soon as the results of the exam are confirmed by the University, and the prize is currently offered at £150. The project based prize is offered to students at Aberdeen University studying the MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience and to MSc students at Heriot Watt studying either the MSc in Petroleum Engineering, Petroleum Geoscience/GEOSEAD or Reservoir Evaluation and Management. Two students from each university will be selected. To be eligible, you must have a significant petrophysics component in your Masters projects. Successful candidates will demonstrate that their project has a practical application of petrophysics and show an interest in the broader discipline of petrophysics. Preference will be given to a non-sponsored student on the MSc course, but the final decision is at the discretion of the AFES committee. The successful students will be expected to produce a poster of their Masters project for the AGM in October. The amount currently available is up to £1000 per student (subject to change). The deadline for applications for the MSc project bursary for Aberdeen University is Friday 13th May at 5pm; and for Heriot Watt is Friday 1st July at 5pm. AFES will review your applications and let you know as soon as possible if you have been successful. AFES also offers partial funding for PhD students with significant petrophysics components in their studies. To be eligible, the student must have an earth science, petroleum engineering or reservoir engineering based PhD with a large enough component of petrophysics that the student could present a poster or short talk at an AFES event. The subject areas may include using log/core data to discriminate facies characteristics within a field; using SCAL data; image log data; saturation height functions; reservoir quality; seismic rock properties; rock mechanics; production logging; determining petrophysical uncertainties etc. Ideally the student will be interested in broader petrophysical subjects and willing to participate in AFES events. Any decision to award funding is at the discretion of the AFES committee. PhD funding will be agreed for each student on a year by year basis and the amount given may change. The current amount is up to £2000 per student per year. AFES is a registered charity in Scotland (Registered charity SC039526). Therefore funding is only available to students studying at Scottish Universities. If you would like to apply for funding or the project based MSc bursary, please complete the form downloadable below and email it to Dawn Houliston (dawn.houliston@uk.bp.com). Please also provide an up to date CV. Downloads
