AFES QUIZ NIGHT………A Night to try and remember! |
The AFES Xmas meeting took a different format this year, with a charity quiz night to raise funds for the ARCHIE Foundation.
The ARCHIE Foundation is aiming to raise at least £3million to help create a world-class Children’s Hospital in Aberdeen for children and families in the North and North East of Scotland. As many AFES members have children born at the hospital’s maternity unit and have had children treated in the Children’s Hospital over the years, the committee felt this was an appropriate time to raise some funds and to have fun doing it. The ARCHIE link was just too obvious to miss.
The venue was the Crombie Hall Students Residence Dining Room and a total of eighteen teams from various op cos., students, service companies and even the DTI took part. A big thanks goes to the University staff for letting us have the room and for manning the bar!
The quiz comprised of several rounds with questions ranging from sport and history to James Bond themes with the AFES specialist round – Cheese and Wine- not proving too popular! Obviously we should have made this a practical/tasting round.
Some of the rounds produced interesting results such as the team who got full marks for Literature, but no marks for Geography…seems like an atlas should be on that team’s list to Santa! While on the TV round (after many pleas of “No questions on soaps”) only one team scored less than half marks and an average score of just under 8 marks (7.888889 for the log analysts amongst you) out of 10.
An interesting conversation was overheard at the bar as one senior petrophysicist contemplated whether the last tune for the music round was Pavarotti or Jose Carreras, while on e of the students could decide if it was the theme from “Italia ’90 or the European Champions League”!
The Archie Question its self proved a bit tricky for some. A tense atmosphere greeted the opening of the envelope…. What if n was too high or too low…all to no avail as the question was “What was Archie’s first name”. The majority knew it was Gus…but some (who shall remain nameless) did not.
But at the end of the evening, a presidential performance by Donald Keir’s team, The West Wing won secured victory over the Know Brainers….oh and by the way Donald ……4 more years as AFES President.
Commiserations to the students team Los Mejores…..So good to know the future our industry is in good hands!
Now a big list of thank yous to various companies and individuals for sponsorship, raffle prizes and help.
Halliburton, Pathfinder, Schlumberger; RML, Helix-RDS, Core Lab, Opus Financial Services, TotalFinaElf (for the Polo shirts which I know the Shell team will wear with pride!); PGL; Baker Atlas INTEQ (for all the log interpretation charts…. I was surprised to see Jim White’s team collecting so many!); …..And to all the teams who took part.
Kenny Peacock from Core Lab for helping out at the last minute and to Thomas Arnold for being press-ganged in to being the scorer.
And a final mention should go to “Fuzzy the Sheep” the mascot of the Helix-RDS team(?). Fuzzy was left behind after the quiz and was rescued and cared for by the AFES committee. In exchange for this care (and the promise not to speak about kebabs or mint sauce), a ransom of £288.16 was raised by the folks at Helix-RDS to add to the evenings total.
So finally, we raised £1372.27 towards the Archie foundation, so our twin objectives were achieved…to raise money and to have some fun!
