AFES Meeting: 15th May, 2019

Abstract: Surface logging technologies such as mud gas analysis are able to provide a fast and cost-effective input for reservoir evaluation. Recent developments in the extraction and analysis hardware allows not only a higher sampling density but also improves the reliability and comparability of the data. In this study we present a case study from the North Sea, United Kingdom where gas data is used as an alternative to classical formation evaluation for a full reservoir characterization. The results demonstrate the capabilities of an advanced mud gas logging dataset and its metadata to provide reservoir saturation and fluid composition indicators.

BiographyJonas Kaiser

Jonas graduated with his MSc in Petroleum Geoscience in Germany in October 2017 with a thesis project about the large scale application of mud gas data in collaboration with Baker Hughes. He then started as a R&D geoscientist for Baker Hughes in Celle, Germany and worked in the development team for the latest advanced mud gas analysis service supporting laboratory analysis, operations and data processing and interpretation. Since January 2019, Jonas joined the geoscience operations team in Aberdeen for a six month assignment as part of a 2 year rotational development program.

BiographyXanat Zacarias-Hernandez

Xanat Zacarias-Hernandez is a 3rd year PhD student in the School of Engineering at University of Aberdeen.  Her research interests are in surface chemistry and multiphase flow relevant to oil recovery and groundwater aquifer remediation. In her PhD project she is investigating the impact of fracture properties on counter-current imbibition using lab-on-a-chip methods.

Xanat holds a BEng in Chemical Engineering from National Autonomous University of Mexico and a MSc in Oil and Gas Engineering from University of Aberdeen.
